Alabama Flatpack, Ali Forbes
An interactive brooch made from recycled car tyres, inspired by life in Andalusia, Alabama. The wearer can re-arrange the layers to make different brooches depending on their mood, and the pin supplied is used to hold the layers together and then fasten to clothingForbes is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, and Central Saint Martins, and the winner of the Swarovski prize at ITS#8 in Trieste, Italy. She is currently working as a designer for Swarovski in Austria. When 17, Forbes, originally from Glasgow, Scotland, lived in Alabama for a year and re-visited it just before starting to design this collection.
The nostalgic aesthetic of the Southern States of America combined a practical interest in bicycles, mechanical objects, industrial materials and processes, form the basis of this collection of interactive jewellery brooches made from recycled rubber which can be adapted and re-arranged to suit the wearers mood.
